Nirbhaya Rape Case

If you have been living under a rock, chances are good you already know about Nirbhaya Rape Case. No doubt we all read or watched an article, social media post or video covering this case and its aftermath; just reading about this case alone can be heartbreaking; one can only imagine what poor Nirbhaya had to endure when we read about what has transpired here.

In 2012, an anonymous girl (dubbed Nirbhaya by media) was brutally raped while travelling in a bus at midnight with her friend. Six men – five of whom were adults while one juvenile was charged and found guilty. Nirbhaya was struck on her head with an iron rod after being raped; due to this trauma she later succumbed. Ram Singh committed suicide while in incarceration while four of the accused received death sentences with the juvenile being sent to remand facility before release after two years.

2019 Hyderabad Gang Rape Case

hyderabad gang rape case telangana Police reported an horrific incident wherein a 26-year old veterinary doctor from Hyderabad was brutally gangraped, murdered and later dumped at the side of a road. She had stopped at a toll plaza at Shamshabad near Hyderabad with her scooter when two lorry drivers and their assistants intentionally punctured it to pretend helping. Later she was brutally gangraped before her assailants killed one in an encounter.

Unnao Rape Case

Unnao, Uttar Pradesh witnessed an unspeakably tragic event when on 4 June 2017, a 17-year old young girl was brutally raped by Kuldeep Singh Sengar – former member of ruling party BJP and one of her accusers. Kuldeep was found guilty on 16 December 2019 for the crime he perpetrated against his victim on 20 December 2019 before being given life imprisonment sentence as part of his sentencing hearing for murdering their victim’s father as part of this trial process.

Hathras Gangrape Case

Yet another shocking case will leave you reeling: a 19-year-old Dalit girl was brutally gang-raped by four men of higher caste than she, in Hathras, Uttar Pradesh, where the incident took place. Following her admission to hospital for treatment she eventually succumbed two weeks later – cremated by Uttar Pradesh Police personnel without the knowledge or presence of family. Protests ensued against their inaction.

Kathua Rape Case

This case is truly horrific: an 8-year-old innocent princess, Abducted, Gang Raped and Murdered in India (Rasana Hamlet near Kathua in Jammu and Kashmir, India). Villagers searched for her until they discovered her dead body a kilometer away from their village on 16 April 2018 when arrest and trial proceedings against eight MEN were initiated in court in Kathua. If that weren’t shocking enough for you – charges have also been filed against 8 Men as part of this crime against humanity (in addition to those already mentioned above).

Badaun Rape Case

Badaun Rape Case involved two victims who fell prey to this deadly crime on May 27, 2014 in Katra Village of Badaun district, Uttar Pradesh. CBI conducted an exhaustive investigation, concluding there had been “NO RAPES”, and released suspects. Unfortunately for CBI and their investigators, POCSO court disapproved the close report on 28 October, 2015.

Shakti Mills Rape Case and Jisha Rape Case

In this incident, a 22-year old Photojournalist was sexually raped by five individuals (three adult and two juvenile), including a juvenile at Shakti Mills in Mumbai while interning for a magazine there. Three were sentenced to death while two more received prison terms until April 4, 2014.

On April 28, 2016, 29-year old Jisha was brutally murdered in Ernakulam, Kerala and her death garnered national media coverage with many sharing her story online and using hashtag ‘Justice For Jisha’ trending nationwide to bring Jisha’s killers justice.

Suzette Jordan Rape Case and Franco Mulakkal Rape Case

On February 5, 2012, Suzette Jordan had the worst night of her life when she was kidnapped by three men while they were driving and held at gunpoint. She was thrown out of the automobile near Kolkata’s Park Street after being raped. Although she received justice, as the saying goes, “justice delayed is justice denied.” Jordan did not live to see the punishment of her criminals. Nine months after Suzette’s passing, on December 10, 2015, the three defendants were found guilty.

A nun accused Franco Mulakkal of raping her 13 times between 2014 and 2016 in June 2018. When the crime was perpetrated on several occasions, the nun frequented a convent in Kerala’s Kottayam District. Three additional nuns then came forward to accuse the Bishop of sexual assault. The Bishop is innocent, the superior general of the congregation insisted. Pope Francis granted the rape accuser Bishop’s request for a leave of absence from his pastoral responsibilities and bishoply duties on September 20, 2018.
